High-Performance Logistics for Large-Scale Chilean Mining
Import of heavy equipment, critical spare parts and industrial supplies for mining operations in northern and southern Chile — with the urgency the sector demands.
International Logistics for Chile's Mining Industry
The mining industry is the engine of Chile's economy, contributing more than 50% of total national exports. Chile is the world's largest producer of copper and a leading producer of lithium, molybdenum and iodine. Major operations such as Minera Escondida (BHP), Chuquicamata and Gabriela Mistral (Codelco), Los Pelambres (Antofagasta Minerals), Cerro Colorado and many others depend on ultra-complex international supply chains to keep their production lines running.
An unplanned shutdown at a concentrator plant or an extraction shovel can cost millions of dollars per day. For this reason, mining logistics tolerate no errors or delays: critical spare parts must arrive at exactly the right moment, oversized pieces require specialised logistics planning, and documentation must be impeccable to avoid holding up customs clearance.
The logistics challenges of Chile's mining sector include the extreme geography of the far north (desert zones above 3,000 metres above sea level), the distance of ports (Antofagasta, Iquique, Arica) from operations, restrictions on transporting hazardous materials (explosives, acids, chemical reagents), special permits for oversized loads on national routes and compliance with increasingly stringent environmental and safety standards. FirstCargo has developed specific experience and processes to address all of these challenges.
How FirstCargo serves your sector
Import of OOG Machinery and Equipment
We manage the import of oversized heavy machinery (Out of Gauge): hydraulic shovels, extraction trucks, conveyor belts and SAG mills. We coordinate oversize permits with the Ministry of Public Works, police escort and specialised transport from the port to the mine site.
Critical Spare Parts Express
When the mine is on standby waiting for a spare part, every hour counts. We activate our urgent air freight service for critical spare parts from anywhere in the world — Europe, USA, Asia — with delivery in Santiago within 3–7 business days and express transport coordination to the north.
Mining Supplies and Chemicals
We import and manage the customs clearance of supplies such as sulphuric acid, cyanide, lime, ANFO explosives and other industrial reagents in compliance with regulations from SESMA, DGAC and the Carabineros protocols for hazardous materials.
Export of Minerals and Concentrates
We manage the export of copper concentrates, cathodes, molybdenum and other minerals from the ports of Antofagasta, Mejillones, Iquique and Arica, with all documentation required for destination markets in Asia and Europe.
Project Logistics (Project Cargo)
For plant expansions and new mining projects, we design comprehensive logistics solutions covering transport, customs clearance, temporary storage and distribution of dozens or hundreds of containers and special pieces in coordination with the construction project.
Why choose FirstCargo for your sector?
Experience in Extreme Environments
We know logistics in Chile's far north: high-altitude routes, extreme weather conditions and the requirements of the port terminals at Antofagasta and Iquique.
Rapid Response to Emergencies
Fast-response protocol for plant shutdown situations. We activate air freight and express courier within hours to minimise unplanned downtime.
Hazardous Materials Management
Team certified in IATA DGR and ADR for hazardous materials transport. We coordinate special permits with DGAC, SESMA and Carabineros.
Reporting for Mining Projects
Tracking and reporting systems adapted to large-scale mining project management requirements, with visibility per item and per purchase order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, we have experience in importing industrial explosives for mining (ANFO, emulsions, detonators). This process requires special permits from the Ministry of the Interior through the Carabineros de Chile and the General Directorate of National Mobilisation (DGMN). We coordinate the entire chain: documentation at origin, priority customs clearance and escorted transport to the mine's explosives store.
For OOG cargo to the north, we manage special circulation permits with the Ministry of Public Works, police or private escort as required, authorised circulation hours and coordination with regional highway authorities and municipalities. We work with carriers specialised in extendable platforms and low-boys for large pieces.
We operate at all ports in Chile's far north: Antofagasta (Puerto Antofagasta and Mejillones), Iquique (Puerto de Iquique and IQUIQUE TERMINAL INTERNACIONAL – ITI), Arica (Terminal Puerto Arica – TPA) and Tocopilla. We know the procedures and stevedoring companies at each terminal.
